Story Behind the Vehicle

Intro

This is a 1985 BMW M6 “shark nosed” E24 6 series originally launched in 1976 to replace the classic E9 CS coupe. This 1985 M635CSi European-version M6 Coupe was extensively restored in 2010 with glass out repaint in factory Bronzit Beige Metallic, new interior in factory Buffalo-Nutria Leder and an M88/3 inline six-cylinder engine rebuild. It has the optional sliding vent roof, headrests in the rear, and air conditioning. This beautiful example accumulated 161,000 miles and is now offered for sale on Collector Chassis. This EURO M6 is in California and has a clear title.

Exterior

The previous owner commissioned a very extensive (windshield and rear window out) repaint in the original BMW color Bronzit Beige Metallic. All new gaskets and window seals were installed after the repaint. This European E24 M635CSi body with small bumpers is all original with no reported accidents.

Interior

The relatively lightweight manually adjustable sport seats were restored in hand-stitched Buffalo-Nutria soft Nappa leather to like-new condition. The previous owner rebuilt the SI board that controls the instrument clusters.

Suspension

The suspension was thoroughly inspected, and new Bilstein sport struts, springs, control arms and performance bushings were installed.

Mechanicals

This 1985 European-market BMW M635CSi features a high-compression (10.5:1) 3.5-liter M88/3 inline-six engine producing 286 horsepower (210 kW) at 6500 RPM and 243 lb-ft (330 Nm) of torque at 5000 RPM, paired with a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission. The previous owner had the engine completely rebuilt.

Seller Comments

The hand built M88/3 motor in the M6 is a high-revving (6800 RPM) double-overhead camshaft powerplant and is identical to the earlier BMW M1. However, the M88/3 engine differed with a more fuel-efficient electronic Bosch (Motronic 1.3) fuel injection control system. For a car of the ’80s, the M6 had impressive performance. It could leap from 0–60 mph in 6.1 seconds and do the quarter mile in 14.7 seconds. Top speed was limited, however, to 158 mph (255 km/h). The core of the M6’s attraction is its magnificent 24-valve, double-overhead-cam, individual-throttle 6-cylinder engine. This M6 was lovingly maintained by a serious collector.

Additional Seller Comments

This M635CSi had its’ engine rebuilt with MaxSil Pistons with proprietary Teflon-coated piston skirts, piston rings, and oversized pins (to be honed to match rod bushings). After the engine was rebuilt, the catalyst and the entire OE muffler system were removed. A new, stainless-steel high-performance Billy Boat dual exhaust system was installed. The engine has never seen operation with a catalytic converter and the required tuning. I originally planned to add catalyst and tune it to comply with California regulations, but I have decided not to do all that work and would not encourage anyone to do so. The paintwork is spectacular and original.
