Introduced as a smaller, more "activity"-focused alternative to the original BMW X5, the E83 X3 offered an attractive, more compact package with strong powertrains, while significantly undercutting the cost of the X5. Built by Magna Steyr in Austria, the E83 is recognized, even by BMW internally, as one of the highest quality products in the company's lineup history. 

Though the X3 is a great, practical, and fun (with that planted xDrive system and throaty naturally-aspirated inline-6 engine) car, it was never destined to be a classic. However, this one is near and dear to my heart. My parents were the original owners, after I pushed them to replace their E39 528i with a winter-capable BMW for the NY storms. We took delivery before X3s started hitting the U.S. market, with the Manhattan dealer claiming this as the first example in the country. Combined with the fact that the production date is my birthday, and I learned how to drive in it, my X3 is here - for good.
